Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu says the Ghana gov’t would send Ghanaian-trained nurses to the UK in return for financial considerations.
Mr Agyemang Manu said this would be akin to an agreement with Barbados, where Ghanaian nurses thrive.
The Dormaa Central MP said this during the 2023 Budget discussion on Monday, December 5.
“We are engaging with the government of the United Kingdom, and we are just about to sign a memorandum of agreement after cabinet approval to begin to send nurses for training and work there and come back home after three years.
“Ghana is going to benefit from the little money that the UK government will pass on. For every single nurse that goes away, when we finish the agreement, it is likely we will get over 1000 pounds to come and support the health system in Ghana. ”
In March this year, Barbados acquired 200 extra Ghanaian nurses to balance the staffing requirements of the island nation.
Barbados Prime Minister Mia Motley thanked the administration for helping her country’s health system.
Ghana and Barbados inked a nursing agreement in 2019.
The arrangement, signed at Jubilee House during Mia Mottley’s official visit to Ghana, saw the first employment of over 100 Ghanaian nurses.
There had been worries regarding the move since some had stated that the nurses might have better been integrated into Ghana’s Health Service.
