Ghana’s Black Stars’ pursuit of talented Ajax Amsterdam midfielder Kudus Mohammed for the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cameroon has hit another roadblock.
Despite being named to Ghana’s final 28-man squad, the playmaker is still recovering from a rib injury in Holland.
Though the Black Stars’ management expected him to join the team last week, Ajax did not release him.
Ajax coach Eric Ten Hag has withdrawn him from Sunday’s Eredivisie match against Utrecht, complicating his participation in the AFCON.
Ten Hag explained that Kudus was unsuitable, adding that Kudus joining Black Stars in Cameroon would be strange.
“[Leaving him out of the Ajax squad against Utrecht] already demonstrates what I’ve been saying all along. He is not [match] fit, and it would be strange for him to participate in the [AFCON],” the Dutch trainer explained.
Kudus sustained the injury last November while playing for the Black Stars in a 2022 World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
He has not appeared in a competitive game for his club or country since.
