Over the period, a number of civil society groups, individuals and policy-making bodies have had their bite on the issue of Dr Bawumia’s paperless ports agenda as the claim it is causing more harm than good to the country.
One of the very people who relentlessly talks about the effect of this agenda on the countries revenue generation is Mr. Franklin Cudjoe, founding president of the IMANI Policy-making group.
Mr. Cudjoe used his Facebook page to commend the president of Ghana on the good steps he has taken to get the country to where it has reached now on a number of policy decisions he has made.
“Nana Addo has made some impressive foreign and trade policy wins. The AfCFTA secretariat in Accra holds the key to Africa’s last hope for total economic integration”, he mentioned.
He, however, made it clear that aside these achievements bagged by the president, towing the lane of Dr Bawumia’s paperless ports agenda has brought the country to losing huge sums of possible revenue.
According to the IMANI boss, the country losses nearly GH¢200m every month due to the implementation of the said agenda.
He wrote:
Nana Addo has made some impressive foreign and trade policy wins. The AfCFTA secretariat in Accra holds the key to Africa’s last hope for total economic integration. Then there is ECOWAS, which he chairs at a very difficult time- increased terrorism and the coronavirus pandemic. Then he helps to diffuse the Nigerian- Ghana retail trade war, at least for now. The President deserves more commendation.
The one major challenge to the trade pact is the retrogressive UNIPASS which is making the state lose nearly Ghc 200m a month. The porous technology is giving way for people to pay so much fewer port duties. Nana Addo, wake up oo. Do not let Bawumia’s enhanced paperless ports agenda continue to fail oo.
