President Akufo-Addo has threatened to put the nation under a lockdown if citizens continue to flout the COVID-19 induced restrictions.

According to the president, he will be left with no other option than to take this step if the COVID-19 cases keep increasing and Ghanaians continually refuse to adhere to the protocols.

Delivering his 22nd address to the nation on January 17, 2021, on matters relating to the fight against the pandemic, President Akufo-Addo said although a lockdown as enforced some months back had a negative impact on the economy, he will not hesitate to call for it if situations do not get better.

“We do not want to go back to the days of partial lockdowns which had a negative impact on our economy and way of life.

But should that become necessary, and should the number of active cases continue to increase at the current rate, I will have no option than to reimpose these restrictions because it is better to be safe than to be sorry. So together, let us all ensure that we respect the protocols,” he said.

Currently, Ghanaians active cases stand at 1,924 with the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions having the highest cumulative numbers of infection. Meanwhile, 44 persons are in severe conditions with four persons in a critical state.
