Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has announced that this would be his last term as a Member of Parliament for the Suame constituency.

The long-serving politician has announced that he would not run in the general election in 2024.

It has become necessary for him to step down, he said in an interview with Accra-based Joy News.

“We have already raised the alarm from the rooftops, which indicates that the choice has already been taken. This isn’t a legal challenge; it’s only for the sake of clarity,” he said.

“There comes a time when one must make the decision to leave while the applause is the highest,” he said.

Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was first elected to the Ghanaian Parliament at the 1996 General Elections, when he was elected to represent the Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He received 47,455 votes out of the 64,394 valid votes cast, or 57.40 percent of the total votes cast. He was defeated by Paul Yeboah, an NDC member who received 10,828 votes; Azong Alhassan, a PNC member who received 3,219 votes; and Habiba Atta, a CPP member who received 2,892 votes.
