Following the appearance in court today, 19th January, of the Supreme Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, the presiding judge declared his arrest illegal and ordered the Federal government to pay him a sum of one billion naira as compensation.
The aggressive invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s house in 2017 was declared illegal and an infringement on his human rights by Justice Benson Anya of the Abia State High Court.
Kanu had initially approached the Court, requesting a sum of N5 billion as a result of the military’s invasion of his father’s house on September 10, 2017.
Furthermore, the presiding judge ruled today that Kanu’s arrest and forcible repatriation to Nigeria in June 2021 was “illegal” under local and international law.
The judge also ordered the Federal government to pay Kanu N1 billion in restitution for the violation of his fundamental human rights.
The court also recommended a political solution to the IPOB-led campaign for the restoration of the defunct Biafra Republic.
