After helping Senegal win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, Sadio Mane will have a stadium named after him (AFCON).
The mayor of Sedhiou, Abdoulaye Diop, said that the stadium would be named after Mane.
The Teranga Lions won their first AFCON championship after a 0-0 normal and extra-time stalemate.
Mane was the hero in the shootout, scoring the winning penalty to make one for his earlier mistake.
The Liverpool winger was also named the tournament’s top player after scoring three goals and two assists.
The Mayor of Sedhiou, Abdoulaye Diop, said Mane deserved the honor for his community.
“I would want to convey the recognition of all the daughters and sons of the area, towards a man who makes known to the whole humanity, Bambali and its regional capital, namely Sédhiou,” Diop added, as cited by the BBC.
The President of Senegal has also awarded the national team’s players with cash and land for winning the AFCON.
In addition to a $87,412 prize, President Macky Sall offered a 200 square metre piece of land in Dakar for each contestant.
The President also made the players Grand Officers of the National Order of the Lion.
Players and other members of the official delegation will also get a 50 million CFA ($87,412) bonus and a 200-square-metre piece of land in Dakar, President Sall said last week.
