Sadio Mane’s Senegal upset Salah’s Egypt on penalties to win the coveted championship for the first time in his nation’s history.
Both Mane and Salah have faced loss previously in the AFCON final, with Senegal falling to Algeria in 2019 and Cameroon beating Egypt in 2017.
Mane – who missed a penalty in the opening minutes of the game – was the hero, as he blasted in the winning spot kick in the shootout. Salah, however, didn’t accept a penalty.
The Egyptian was noticeably sad after Senegal’s triumph was announced and Mane was quick to recognize, giving his club teammate a hug and conveying his sympathies.
Regardless of the fact that Senegal won the AFCON, Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Qotb Abou Gabal Ali Gabaski deserves a mention as he stole the show as he saved two penalties to bring the Pharaohs through to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Zamalek goalie performed the water bottle tactics on the Senegal players which paid benefits but they couldn’t win the final.
Gabaski was caught analyzing the favored angles of Senegal players’ takers before every attempt. He guessed correctly two times and was the hero of the night that witnessed no goal in 120 minutes.
