While marriage is a lovely institution, many humans have been led to believe it is the ultimate barometer of one’s worth and worthiness.
With such a backward mindset, many people have entered marriages that are suffocating them but fear divorce due to societal stigma.
There has been a sort of awakening among the youth in recent years, and divorce is said to be on the rise.
Numerous people have ended their relationships for a variety of reasons.
The majority of cases involved men abusing their partners or engaging in extramarital affairs.
As heartbreaking as it may be, this situation is not unique to ‘worldly people’; some Gospel musicians and preachers of the word of God have also experienced divorce.
The BBC Ghana has compiled a list of five prominent female gospel musicians whose marriages ended in tears and divorce.
Surprisingly, all of these people were married to men of God or preachers whom society considers to be the holiest.
1. Gifty Osei
The gospel singer was formerly married to Pastor Prince Elisha Osei and was known in the showbiz circles as Gofty Osei. They lived a happy life with the man of God even contributing to the growth of her music career until 2017 when they signed their divorce papers and parted ways officially.
Their 10-year-old marriage officially ended and Empress Gifty Osei married Hopeson Adorye of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), changing her name to Gifty Adorye.
2. Joyce Blessing
Joyce Blessings’ story has not yet ended In divorce but the gospel singer is no longer with the husband. It has been trending rumors that the unbreakable was cheating on her husband Dave Joy and that he found out through DNA test that one of their children was not for him.
She has however rubbished the news and apologized to her fans for tarnishing her gospel brand with such stories.
3. Obaapa Christy
Powerful singer, Obaapa Christy was married to Pastor Hammond Love for many years. Just as the many on the list, her husband was managing her career until things went south.
The beautiful relationship began to fall apart with accusations and counter-accusations from both parties.
One of the damning allegations that surfaced was that Obaapa Christy, formerly known as Christiana Love, left her matrimonial home for overseas under the guise of caring for orphans but was allegedly having an affair with another man in Germany.
Christiana Love also came with her own hot coal in a 2010 interview with Kwame Sefa Kayi on Peace FM accusing her husband of killing gospel musician Seth Frimpong.
4. Diana Hopeson
Mrs. Diana Hopeson’s marriage crashed over claims of domestic abuse and cheating.
The gospel singer left her former husband and is currently married to Rev Emmanuel Hopeson.
Esther Smith was married to Rev. Ahenkan Bonsu but divorced him after four years.
The soulful singer accused the man of God of domestic abuse and even alleged that the preacher was secretly sleeping with their house help while she was reportedly in Germany to deliver their third child.
