According to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, if the disputed electronic levy is not approved, the Ghanaian economy would suffer.
He went on to say that if the e-levy is not authorized, the government would be forced to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund.
The president issued a rallying call to the people of Ghana, warning that a return to the IMF would derail all economic gains made during his government.
Ken Ofori-Atta said that the E-levy will prevent the country from depending on the International Monetary Fund for financial assistance, which he described as “awful.”
“We weren’t able to pay nurses and instructors due of the constraints,” he said. It’s only a matter of believing that you can go back to Egypt.”
“We’ve lost sight of how difficult and obstinate that Washington master could be.”
“We can deal with them for guidance, but we will never again participate in an IMF program,” Ofori-Atta said. “If we don’t implement this E-levy, we are just pushing ourselves to the verge of extinction.”
Since the E-levy was announced by the Finance Minister, certain Ghanaians, notably members of the Minority Caucus, have expressed dissatisfaction with it.
During a recent press conference, the Minister said that the government would continue to engage with stakeholders on the bill before resubmitting it to the House of Commons for consideration.
