Pro rally driver Ken Block, who later became an Internet sensation with his daring stunts behind the wheel, was killed in a snowmobile accident on Monday, his team Hoonigan Racing confirmed. He was 55.

“It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today,” Hoonigan said in a statement on Instagram.

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

The accident took place in Utah’s Wasatch County on Monday when Block was riding on a steep slope and the snowmobile upended and landed on top of him, the Sheriff’s Office said, as quoted by Reuters.

The 55-year-old was riding with a group but was alone at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was pronounced deceased at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident,” they said in a statement, adding that he was riding in a group but was alone when the accident occurred. He is survived by his wife Lucy and three children.

Block spent most of his time participating in a variety of winter sports including driving UTVs, snowmobiling and snowboarding when he wasn’t on the road driving electric stunt cars from Audi or race cars from Porsche.

The rally driver, who is also the co-founder of DC shoes, quickly became a prominent face in the world of rally. He developed the Hoonigan brand and also created the much-loved Gymkhana video series.

Having begun his rallying career in 2005, Block was named Rookie of the Year in the Rally America Championship. He competed in the World Rally Championship and won several rallycross medals at the X Games.

In the Gymkhana video series produced by the American, fans saw him driving on dangerous tracks and obstacle courses. The series racked up millions of views on YouTube.
