Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) Yaw Buaben Asamoa has dismissed allegations by National Democratic Congress (NDC) that NPP is working with the Electoral Commission (EC) to rig the forthcoming 2020 general elections, arguing that the NDC has no basis to be afraid of the elections.
For him, the world is strategizing on how post-COVID-19 economies will be run, and are taking steps to fight corruption, and the NDC must move away from their obsession with their allegations of “Rigging Elections”.
“While political leadership worldwide are moving on post-COVID-19 economies and cleaning the Airbus mess and Ghana has a grip on the NCA case with the special prosecutor cleared to go, the NDC is stuck on the old song of “Rigging Elections”.
Meanwhile, the NDC has no policy, no running mate, and no basis for the fear of elections,” he lashed out on Facebook.
The NDC, at a press conference, on Thursday accused the NPP of working in collaboration with the National Identification Authority(NIA) and the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to rig 2020 in its favour.
The NDC sighted the EC’s insistence on compiling a new voters’ register – using NIA cards and passports as the only identification documents to enable people to register to vote – as a strategy to disenfranchise many of the NDC’s supporters in favour of the NPP.
But the NPP hit back saying that with or without a new voters’ register, the NPP will win the forthcoming election convincingly.
The NDC has been opposed to the compilation of a new register insisting that the old one is credible enough to be used and the compilation amounts to a waste of resources.
Their view has been supported by many civil society organizations. But the NPP has been a fervent supporter of the EC’s resolve to compile the register.
