Asamoah Gyan wants to lead Ghana in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Gyan’s previous Black Stars outing was three years ago. The Sunderland man replaced Tunisia in the round of 16 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

His club career in recent years makes him tough to pick. Legon Cities last played Gyan in May 2021 in the Ghana Premier League. Months later, he left Accra and is hunting for a new club.

Many assume the former Al Ain man has retired after 16 months of inactivity. Gyan rejected retirement rumours, saying he had unfinished work with Black Stars.

“Anything can happen. You know it’s happened before. I’m talking about Cameroon in 1994 with Roger Milla you know coming back from retirement to play in the World Cup. I haven’t retired yet. I haven’t announced my retirement. You know I’ve been out for almost two years now due to injuries and my body,” he told BBC.

“I need to get my body back in shape. So I’ve started training of course so I need to get back in shape and see how my body reacts to playing competitive football. Talent-wise, I reckon it’s there already so I have to prepare physically and then we’ll see what happens.”

Reacting to the fuss in town, Kumasi-based Light FM sports journalist Kojo Abu Bonsra popularly called Super Obondede in the sports fraternity has blasted Asamoah Gyan to get serious about his brand and stop ranting and wailing about re-joining Black Stars.

As a reminder, Gyan is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, including six in the World Cup, making him the continent’s leading scorer in the competition.
