In Nigeria’s general elections on February 25, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission named Bola Tinubu the president-elect.
The 70-year-old former Lagos State governor, Tinubu, won the 2023 presidential race with 8,794,726 votes.
At the International Collation Centre in Abuja early on March 1, 2023, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu declared Tinubu the victor. Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso lost to Tinubu.
Kwankwaso got Kano State while the three leading presidential candidates won 12 states each.
Tinubu defeated former vice president and nearest rival Atiku with 1.8 million votes.
Tinubu first ran for president in 2023, according to the PUNCH. The former senator led the coalition that overthrew the PDP in 2015 and has expanded his sway beyond the South-West region.
Other presidential candidates included Dumebi Kachikwu of the African Democratic Congress; Kola Abiola, People’s Redemption Party; Omoyele Sowore, Africa Action Congress; Adewole Adebayo, Social Democratic Party; Malik Ado-Ibrahim, Young Progressive Party; Prof Christopher Imumulen, Accord Party; Prof Peter Umeadi, All Progressives Grand Alliance; and Yusuf Mamman Dan Talle, Allied Peoples Movement.
