Obeta John, a 27-year-old Yahoo boy suspected of online fraud, is accused of killing his girlfriend, Idowu Buhari, because he wanted her to return money that a victim of his scam had sent to her.
A first-year Mass Communication student at Gateway Polytechnic in Saapade, Ogun State, was allegedly battered to death by the suspect.
Abimbola Oyeyemi, a spokesman for the police in Ogun State, stated that the suspect was apprehended on Tuesday after a distress call was received at the Ode-Remo divisional headquarters.
It was reported to the police that the culprit, a resident of 3 Mojubade Compound, Eredu Ishara, shut his door and began beating the girl, pounding her head against the wall.
Despite his neighbors’ best efforts, they were unable to coax him into opening the door.
Oyeyemi said that CSP Fasogbon Olayemi, the Ode-Remo division’s deputy police officer, had responded swiftly to the call and brought his men to the spot, “where they met the victim in the pool of her blood after pushing the door open.”
Despite police efforts to get her to safety, the on-duty physician at Ishara State Hospital declared the lady dead upon arrival.
The culprit, who is reportedly from Enugu State, has been arrested.
After being questioned by police, Oyeyemi said, “the suspect revealed to the police that he is an online fraudster and that a particular amount of money from one of his customers was deposited into the account of his dead girlfriend who refused to handover it over to him.”
He stated the suspect told him the girl was killed in a dispute over money.
Meanwhile, Lanre Bankole, Ogun’s state commissioner of police, issued a transfer order to send the suspect to the State Criminal Investigations and Investigations Division (CIID) so that the murder unit may continue its investigation and prosecution.
