30% of teachers in Ghana don’t qualify to teach – NTC Director

30% of teachers in Ghana don’t qualify to teach
Dr Christian Addai Poku, Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC)

Dr Christian Addai Poku, Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), believes 30% of Ghanaian instructors are ineligible to teach in our various schools.

He said his organization is cooperating with the Private Schools Council to set out a scheme for unskilled instructors.

“Some of the materials we are accepting into our Teacher Training Institutions do not fulfill criteria, therefore it is best to get this right from the start,” Dr Poku added.

The Director of the National Teaching Council (NTC) within the Ministry of Education (MoE) revealed collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) (GES).

Mr Addia Poku said the National Teaching Council (NTC) is planning to educate 2,000 unlicensed private school instructors as part of its efforts to guarantee that most teachers in the nation are licensed.

Dr Christian Addia Poku said that over 1,000 private school teachers would be taught on how to successfully teach reading and numeracy.

“The training will be used to educate untrained teachers in best practices for teaching reading and numeracy, as well as professional practice and conduct.

“We recognise that many untrained instructors have excellent material knowledge but lack pedagogical skills,” said Dr Addai Poku, Registrar of the National Teaching Council.
